6 DAY - BEST OF KENYA  (Book Now)

 

On this safari you have the opportunity of visiting the best wildlife sanctuary in the world, stopping at two of the rift valley lakes of Elementaita and Nakuru, famous for their abundant birdlife. The local flights and three nights spent in the Masai Mara ensure that you maximize on your game viewing allowing more time to explore as much of the Masai Mara as possible. Both accommodations are stunning within themselves and are perfectly located to take in all the wildlife action.


Day 1: NAIROBI - LAKE ELEMENTAITA (D)

The first morning of this adventure takes you from the hustle and bustle of Nairobi city to the small but beautiful soda ash Lake Elementaita located in the famous Great Rift Valley. Here, you will have the opportunity to partake in a number of optional activities including bird watching, horse riding or a visit to the natural warm spa that flows into the lake (all at additional costs). Sunbird Lodge is a stunning eco-friendly lodge with just 14 well-appointed cottages perched high on a hillside overlooking the lake.

You will arrive at Sunbird Lodge in time to enjoy a light lunch while taking in the breath-taking views that surround you before you can settle into your rooms and while away the rest of the day in any way you please. The Lodge overlooks Lake Elementaita and has fabulous bird life. Each private bungalow is fitted with huge glass sliding doors with an impeccable view, large bed and huge shower. 

Lake Elementaita is one of the famous soda ash lakes of the Great Rift Valley, and home to numerous flamingos and over 400 species of birds. This small but beautiful lake offers you the chance to relax or choose from a number of optional activities such as horse riding, bird viewing or a visit to the natural warm spa that flows into the lake.

Day 2: LAKE ELEMENTAITA / NAKURU NATIONAL PARK (B / L / D)

Today is an exciting day as you will have the opportunity to visit Lake Nakuru National Park ; a day in this wildlife rich park is always a great start to any safari.

In addition to being a birders paradise with over 400 different species living around the lake’s shore, Nakuru National park is world famous for being home to the largest concentration of the endangered rhino (both black and white) in Kenya. Other species commonly found in the area include waterbuck, Rothschild’s giraffe, giant python as well as the odd appearance of lion and leopard. Lunch will be enjoyed at one of the park’s many picnic sites overlooking the lake before you begin your drive back to Sunbird Lodge in time for sundowners and another delicious meal.

Day 3: LAKE ELEMENTAITA - MASAI MARA (B / L / D)

From Lake Elementaita your safari takes you on to the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve: After breakfast, you will be transferred to Loldia airstrip for your morning flight to the Mara. An en-route game drive through the reserve is sure to give you a taste of what is to come in the next few days. You will reach the stunning and perfectly located Karen Blixen Camp in time for lunch which is served overlooking the wallowing pods of hippos in the Mara River. Here you will bid farewell to your driver/guide as future game drives will be done in the Karen Blixen Camp vehicles. Before lunch, you will be given a short briefing on how the camp works and what to expect before you are shown to your tents.

After a light lunch you have the chance of heading out on your first game drive in the Mara North Conservancy, returning to the camp in time for dinner.

Located in the heart of the Mara North Conservancy and right on the River, Karen Blixen Camp is a stunning property to enjoy the Mara from. With 22 safari style tents all furnished to a high standard and with en-suite bathrooms that have constant hot and cold running water, the property really does aim to make you as comfortable as possible. The extensive verandas are perfect for enjoying the spectacular Mara sunsets.

The camp has an onsite culinary school which aims to train locals from the area. You can arrange to have a lunch here and it’s an amazing experience. Wifi is available in the main camp office and there is limited cell phone access in the camp. A la carte dinning is offered for breakfast, Lunch and dinner and the service is excellent.

Mara North Conservancy is a private wilderness area that forms the north-western zone, bordering the Masai Mara National Reserve. The world-class conservancy is a partnership between a few member camps and over 800 Maasai landowners that guarantees an exclusive safari while minimizing the impact on the environment local communities. Throughout the year large numbers of herbivores such as elephants, giraffes, zebras, Thomson’s gazelles and impalas seek the area for water and grazing.

The Mara River flows through the conservancy at the foot of the Oloololo Escarpment and families of hippo and large crocodiles can be seen resting lazily in the waters. In the northern corridor, the scenic Lemek Hills make an important wildlife refuge, particularly to a pack of endangered African wild dog. Mara North Conservancy is also home to the Leopard Gorge; world famous due to its significance as birthing and maternity ground for the big cat predators. Prides of lions, cheetah and leopards have made the conservancy their homeland area.

Day 4: MASAI MARA (B / L / D)

This morning, there is the opportunity to rise especially early and experience a game viewing adventure from an entirely different perspective! A hot air balloon safari across the Masai Mara (at additional cost) in the crisp morning air, and lasts for approximately an hour, allows for a beautifully peaceful experience as you float silently above plains, forests and rivers. Upon landing a fully cooked champagne breakfast awaits in the heart of the bush. More game viewing opportunities arise later that morning en-route back to camp and in the afternoon.

In addition to the abundance of spectacular game, there are also over 450 species of birds that have been identified in the Masai Mara Ecosystem.

Alternatively, you could spend your day a little differently; rise just before dawn and make your way out into the conservancy and watch the sun rise over the plains and see the animals come to life. Return to camp by mid-morning for breakfast and an afternoon of game spotting from the comfort of your private deck or pamper yourself with a soothing massage (at additional cost) at the spa. In the late afternoon, once the temperatures have cooled, you will have another chance to spot the many species that make the Masai Mara so special on the day’s last game drive. Back at camp; a hot shower under the stars await, followed by a hearty meal and a well deserved early night.

Day 5: MASAI MARA (B / L / D)

This morning it’s another early start as you set off for the gates of the Masai Mara National Reserve. After an early breakfast, you will head out into the main reserve on an extended game drive pausing under the shade of an acacia tree to enjoy a simple yet sumptuous lunch. Visit the Mara River and keep your eyes peeled for the numerous hippos and crocodiles who enjoy bathing in its waters but also keep an eye out for the last members of the famous Big Five. As you arrive back at camp after a long day there may be time for a quick swim or a walk around the camp with a Masai guide to spot the smaller species (additional cost) before the sun starts to set on your final day in the Masai Mara.

Day 6: MASAI MARA - NAIROBI (B)

You will be pleased to hear that although it is the last day of your safari, you still have the opportunity to experience one last drive game before coming back to camp for breakfast. After packing and freshening up, you will be transferred to the airstrip in time for your flight back to Nairobi. Upon arrival in Nairobi, you will be transferred to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for you onward journey or international flight. Should you have extra time to kill before your departure flight, there are a large number of excursions which we can offer (at additional cost) in Nairobi to make the most of this last afternoon.
